The JCMT (Japanese Council for Medical Training), in cooperation with medical institutions in developing countries in Southeast Asia and elsewhere, selects and invites outstanding doctors who will be responsible for the future of medical care in their own countries to Japan for training in advanced medical care at Toranomon Hospital. The goals of this project are to contribute to improving the level of medical care in the doctors' native countries through the accumulated knowledge and skills they gain in this training (international contribution), and to foster ties of friendship between Japan and the participating countries through this training (international goodwill).
The JCMT project was launched in 1982 with funding provided by the Japanese government, but is currently operated entirely with sponsorship by private companies. The project has now continued for more than 40 years, and more than 300 "Toranomon Fellows" are playing active roles in frontline medical care in countries around the world.
