The JCMT - International contribution and international friendship through training of doctors from the developing nations.
Since Toranomon Hospital opened in 1958, it has been one of Japan’s leading hospitals in the field of advanced subspecialized medical care. Toranomon Hospital also has a long history and extensive record of achievements in clinical research. Thus, it offers the ideal environment for receiving senior/promising fellows.
1)
Regular Session Course: As the JCMT accepts only a small
number of Fellows, it can offer detailed “tailor-made” training
programs suited to the needs of the individual doctor. This also
improves individual training efficiency.
2)
Refresher Course: These short courses enable long-term
follow-up for individual doctors who have completed the Regular
Session Course.
3)
Follow-up Training Program: The JCMT also dispatches
doctors from Toranomon Hospital to the Fellows’ home countries
to provide practical guidance in a “hands-on” environment that
is not possible in Japan for medical-legal reasons.
In particular, the long-term follow-up and continuity provided
by 1) and 2) are distinctive features of the JCMT Program. These
features consolidate the program an extremely effective
international cooperation activity in the invaluable aspects of
improving knowledge and competence in medical technology.
The doctors accepted for training at Toranomon Hospital are talented physicians who are carefully selected from leading national universities and other core medical institutions in their home countries. As a result, their training, which centers on advanced medical technology, contributes directly to improving the level of medical technology in their home countries.
Besides the opportunity to study country’s history and culture, the JCMT provides a pleasant living environment for its Fellows while in Japan. They obtain experience of the general everyday life of the Japanese people. The JCMT staff also provides everyday backup in answering fellows’ questions, solving problems, and responding to special requests. In addition to introducing them to Japanese history, the program also includes study tours to Kyoto and Nara and other social activities which enable the Fellows to experience Japanese culture and to know more about the tradition, history, heritage and values.
As of 2013, the JMCT Program has a long history of 31 years since it was founded in 1982. The program has produced a large number of graduates who have returned to their home countries and are now providing guidance and leadership in medical subspecialties in their own countries. The JCMT Program continues to exchange information with its graduates, particularly through the ongoing training activities mentioned above. The former JCMT Fellows in each country also have a sense of camaraderie as “Toranomon graduates” and maintain professional/personal relationships with fellow graduates after returning to their respective countries.
The JCMT was originally established as a project of Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (former MITI). Based on a philosophy of “heart to heart personal exchange” between Japan and the nations of Southeast Asia, the JCMT Program has been a pure international contribution/ international friendship activity since its inception, with no conditions attached for the counterpart countries. Today, the program is carried out with joint public and private sector support, and continues to adhere faithfully to these principles. All funding for the program is provided in the form of donations, with no strings attached, by private corporations which also support these principles.
