A Report from the JCMT Secretariat -Activities during Fiscal Year 2014
In Regular Session Courses for new Fellows, the JCMT received a total of 6 Fellows during the year, including 2 from Thailand and 1 from Vietnam in the Spring Session and 2 from Malaysia and 1 from Vietnam in the Autumn Session.
As training in medical equipment and technologies, training in
advanced diagnostic techniques was provided using various types of
endoscopes, ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) equipment, computed tomography imaging equipment and
other technologies in Toranomon Hospital. Training in current
Japanese clinical medical technologies was also given through
observation of the actual medical setting and related discussions,
covering surgical technologies using surgical microscopes, the
thoracoscope, laparoscope and endoscope, intraoperative ultrasonic
diagnostic equipment, intraoperative monitors, etc.,
catheterization, surgical techniques and postoperative management,
multidisciplinary collaborative team rehabilitation treatment,
etc.
To deepen the Fellows’ understanding of modern Japanese society
and the Japanese people, the Fellows experienced general everyday
life in Japan during their training periods and, at the same time,
were also given opportunities to experience Japanese history and
culture, etc.
As part of these activities, the JCMT conducted study tours to
Nara and Kyoto during both the Spring and Autumn Sessions.
In Refresher Courses, the JCMT received a total of 9 former Fellows from Vietnam, Mongolia, Indonesia and Malaysia, including special invitations. This number was larger than in normal years.
In the Follow-up Training Program, the JCMT organized the following 3 visits to counterpart countries.
① In early December 2014, the Vice President of Toranomon
Hospital, Dr. Shozo Yamada, gave a demonstration of endoscopic
pituitary tumor resection and guidance on case diagnosis, and also
presented a lecture on the subject to JCMT Alumni and other
Vietnamese neurosurgeons at Viet Duc Hospital, Hanoi Medical
School.
② In early February 2015, the Head of the Toranomon Hospital
Department of Endovascular neurosurgery Dr. Yuji Matsumaru gave
lectures, guidance on surgical techniques and guidance on
diagnosis in connection with endovascular neurosurgery to JCMT
Alumni and other Indonesian neurosurgeons at Pertamina Central
Hospital, etc. in Indonesia.
③ In mid-February 2015, Dr. Kuniaki Ohara of the Toranomon
Hospital Department of Dermatology gave guidance on surgical
techniques for skin cancer, guidance in case diagnosis and a
lecture to JCMT Alumni and other Indonesian dermatologists at the
Department of Dermatovenereology of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital,
University of Indonesia.
In mid-July, the JCMT held a reception for the Corporate Sponsors of the JCMT Program, the JCMT Fellows and doctors at Toranomon Hospital. All of the Fellows reported on the current conditions and issues facing their respective countries and also expressed their thanks in a song. More than 50 persons participated in this event, which overflowed with smiling faces from beginning to end.
